England’s over confidence dented India’s chances in WTC final

Published

on

India is all set to clash with New Zealand in the World Test Championship final on June 18. This historic match will be held at Southampton. Meanwhile, the overconfidence of the England cricket board has now become a minus point for India ahead of this big match.

A few months back, the points tally of WTC was pretty close. New Zealand confirmed its berth in the final very early. Australia, England, and India were in contention for the second spot. England was overconfident that it will qualify for the finals and arranged a two-match Test series with New Zealand in early June, as a warmup series for the historic game.

However, India got historic wins against Australia and England earlier this year and booked that second slot of the final. With that, England’s hopes on the WTC final were crushed. The test series against New Zealand turned out to be a warm-up game for the Black Caps, but not the Brits.

New Zealand dominated England in both the tests. Though the first test was a draw, New Zealand found some positives from the game. The first one is the form of opener Devon Conway, who scored a double-century in his debut game. Tim Southee impressed with the ball by taking six wickets in the first innings and one wicket in the second innings.

The Black Caps completely crushed England in the second test, even in the absence of Kane Williamson and Tim Southee. Trent Boult and Matt Henry took four and three wickets respectively in the first innings. Conway, Ross Taylor, and Will Young impressed with the bat by scoring half-centuries. Henry and Boult fired in the second innings as well by scalping three and two wickets respectively. The duo took a combined total of 12 wickets in this game. Henry was awarded Man of the Match and Conway won the Man of the Series award. Moreover, this series will not be counted in the next WTC cycle.

New Zealand got the perfect warmup for the game. Their bowling is super strong with Southee, Boult, Henry, and Neil Wagner in supreme form. The batting also looks good with Conway, Taylor, and Latham. There is no need to talk about Kane Williamson. Compared to the Black Caps, Team India will be going without much practice. On paper, New Zealand is now the hot favourites of the game. Thus, the overconfidence of England turned in favour of New Zealand and became a minus for India.

MC Mary Kom lost in her quarter final bout against Colombian Rio 2016 bronze medallist Ingrit Valencia at the Tokyo Olympics. She was declared the loser in a 3-2 decision in the quarter-final bout.

Speaking to a news channel, Mary Kom said that, “When I entered the doping centre to give my sample after the fight, even then I couldn’t believe that I lost. My coach was trying to tell me that I won, but what does that mean I’m not able to understand.”

She further added that, “I thought I was winning the fight. Then I saw Kiren Rijiju’s tweet on social media about my defeat, I was shocked and upset after that. I don’t know what to say, I can’t believe a decision like this was made.”

She also said that, “I can’t even protest because we were told that’s not allowed in this Olympics. Things like these have happened to me in the past as well in other competitions. It’s not the case with this Olympics alone. A similar thing happened with me in the last boxing world championships also.”

She asserted that this was the worst Olympics for her and very badly organised.
